Electric scooters refer to stand-up scooters that are powered by an electric motor. In the past, they were primarily used for leisure. Today, they are a legal mode of transport in some cities. Read the extract below to understand why the electric scooter trend is unstoppable.

How do Electric Scooters Operate? 

Riding the electric scooter is an easy task. Place it on a flat surface, position one leg on the platform, unlock the wheels, ignite the scooter and gently accelerate as you place the other foot on the chassis. The scooter has an electric braking system to ensure you can stop without losing balance. 

Most scooters have an LED display that will show your speed and the amount of charge left. To charge the scooter, plug its charger into the charging terminal and connect it to a standard power outlet.

Other than being fun to ride, electric scooters are environmentally friendly since they do not use fossil fuels. They could be the future of urban transport since they are portable, relatively fast and can easily manoeuvre through busy streets. Besides, they are affordable and cheap to maintain.

Below are a few safety tips to observe when riding the electric scooter; 

  1. Be gentle on the brakes and acceleration. Some scooters have sensitive brakes so you could topple if you brake suddenly.
  2. Do not ride on busy streets if you are a new rider. Gain some experience by riding the scooter at home.
  3. Maintain a reasonable speed when riding in public areas. Be on the lookout for pedestrians and other motorists.
  4. Wear protective clothing such as helmets and knee pads.
  5. Do not ride the scooter while drunk. Also, avoid using your mobile phone when riding the scooter. 

Electric Scooters in Australia

There are varying regulations regarding the use of scooters in Australia. While some states prohibit citizens from riding the scooters in public areas, others allow them on public roads and footpaths. Riders have to observe road safety and wear protective clothing. Some states demand that the scooter should have a maximum power output of 200 watts. Besides, riders should observe a speed limit of between 10-15 km/h. 

Most states are in consultation with scooter hire companies to conduct scooter trials in various cities. Therefore, electric scooters might be road legal in all parts of Australia in a few years to come.
